A PRELUDE ON A PIANIST'S NAME

​

The composer had the pleasure of dining with Louis Lortie at Lake Como & realized the pianist's name (four syllables) fit with the first four notes of this prelude, hence the title. It continuously develops these 4 notes into various moods & styles: abstract, homophonic, contrapuntal, chorale & grandiose. It ends with a final move inside the piano. It was recorded  by the composer for the CD FINALMENTE.

NOTTURNO No. 1

​

This work was commissioned as a birthday gift by Dr. Mandelli for his wife Selma, who shares the same birthday as the composer. Indeed 12/12/12, an uncommon numerical date warranted a special piece. The result is a work that tonally harmonizes a 12 note tone-row albeit not in a strict way. Towards the end, glimpses of the celebratory tune are woven into the texture.

DIVERTIMENTO No. 1

A light hearted albeit challenging piece that introduces sax players to an extended technique, namely sharp breath sounds. Various articulations combined with rhythmic challenges make this short work a pleasant addition to a players repertoire. It is playable by all saxophones and was commissioned & premiered by Danilo Russo in Bari, Italy.

A COMPOSITION'S SOLILOQUY

​

This virtuosic work requires players to both recite an original text & musically comment the story. It is the composition itself that addresses the audience by telling them how the life of a concert piece of music has changed over the centuries. Extended techniques add color to the writing and aim to musically distinguish the present time from the past. It was commissioned & premiered in Italian by Marco Gerboni, in Ferrara, Italy. He also recorded it, with the composer as narrator (in the English version) for the CD WIND MUSIC.

The original story recounts the life of CODY and listeners immediately appreciate the virtuoso skill required to both play and recite the text. A challenge in terms of articulation & extended techniques not to mention the acting demands made on the performer. The work was recorded by Felix Del Tredici for the CD WIND MUSIC.
