PUCCINI BRASS FANTASY

This work is a transcription, adaptation & embellishment of four of the composer's favorite Puccini operas: Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, La Rondine & Turandot. A concert piece that aims to transform brass players into singers by seamlessly moving from one glorious melody to the next, thereby paying homage to Italy's legendary composer. It is sure to please audiences on any brass quintet program.

SEXTET No. 1

​

Commissioned by Francisco Martinez for the Sax Ensemble, Madrid (hence the Spanish subtitle), this is a very personal work. The composer's mother suffered a heart attack just as the composition phase began. After some online research, the composer learnt that the human heart goes through various transformations based on age, mood, state of mind & of course health. This inspired him to compose a work that includes inhaling sounds that symbolize the oxygen needed for all hearts to function. A dramatic work full of pathos and hope.

AN ARTIST'S SOLILOQUY

This  virtuoso work was commissioned & premiered by Lars Mlekusch & the MSQ for their Italian tour in 2011. They subsequently recorded it for the CD WIND MUSIC. The solo sop sax part represents the artist and the sax quartet today's society. Can an artist exist without regard for viewers or listeners and be comprehensible? These and other issues are musically portrayed using all the extended techniques the saxophone can perform & combined into a faithful representation of the composer's aesthetic.The work was recorded by Lars Mlekusch & the MSQ for thd CD Windmusic.

FANTASIE DI SIENA

​

Commissioned and premiered by the President's Quintet, Dr. Jose Diaz Director at the U of C, Fresno, USA, this Theme & Variations draws on a Folk Melody the composer heard during his time in Siena. In five movements with very different characters, the work features a solo clarinet cadenza as well as duos, trios & quartets for various combinations. The aim is to portray a sense that one is in Italy's Piazza Del Campo during Siena's Palio.

Commissioned & expressly composed for the original Italian Sax Quartet (Federico Mondelci, Marco Gerboni, Mario Marzi & Massimo Mazzoni) NATURE'S SOLILOQUY (available with English or Italian text) is a plea to mankind to be more aware of our planet & all living things. Players recite original texts while recounting the rapport between humans & the environment.
